Government Approves Task for Adjusting the National Power Development Plan for 2021–2030, with a Vision to 2050 (PDP-8)
On December 31, 2024, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 1710/QD-TTg, approving the task of preparing adjustments to PDP-8. Key points include:
1. Scope and Planning Boundary
The plan covers the development of power generation sources and transmission grids at voltage levels of 220 KV and above within Vietnam’s territory for the period 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050. It also includes projects for interconnecting the national grid with neighboring countries.
2. Development Perspectives
– The power development plan must be based on scientific foundations, ensuring continuity, dynamism, and openness, without legitimizing violations.
– Rapidly develop the power sector on the principles of fair competition and the implementation of market mechanisms for electricity pricing.
– Strengthen the development of renewable energy sources, especially wind and solar power (including rooftop solar, solar power on irrigation reservoirs, solar power on existing hydropower reservoirs, centralized solar power, etc.); fully maximize the potential of renewable energy sources equipped with energy storage systems to support delayed large baseload power projects, thereby contributing to ensuring energy supply security and achieving the Net Zero carbon target by 2050.
– Develop interconnections of the power grid with neighboring countries (China, Laos, Cambodia).
3. Implementation Timeline
The task of adjusting PDP-8 must be completed within 30 months from the date of approval and the selection of the consultant responsible for drafting the adjustment plan.
